Soft rock, or as it’s been termed more recently, yacht rock, has never really gone away. Artists like Phoenix , Thundercat and Mystery Jets all have a love of the bouffanted of head, the thin of tie, the moustachioed of musical partners: think Hall & Oates, Steely Dan and Toto. So it is with Post Sex Nachos, the impish band from Missouri, now based in Nashville. They’re no strangers to pleather. Their MO is all about the clean, effervescent keyboard lines and rousing choruses, and they do so with gusto. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist Sammy Elfanbaum’s insistent yelp is authentic of this mid-eighties genre.
Recorded in Nashville over a six month period, and produced by Aaron Wagner, Elfanbaum describes it as “a release of pent-up tension” and frames it as an optimistic antidote to contemporary America, with all of its problems and divisions.
At its best (shimmering downtempo track ‘Sound Of You’, the bubbling synthpop of ‘Junk’ and ‘Silver Line’) it’s easy to imagine this accompanying a tense Stranger Things scene or a remake of an eighties film. At its most commercial (‘Insane’, ‘Comin’ On Back’) it’s not very memorable.
This isn’t indie pop which challenges, but rather basks in the warm glow of nostalgia. The band seem to be mining their parents’ record collection, and although it’s melodic and nice enough, it’s a little safe and over-familiar. I like some extra jalapeños along with my nachos.
