The classic dirty-rock sound of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs has taken a completely new, though not unexpected twist with the long awaited arrival of It’s Blitz! Since the 21st century invasion of the music scene by mainstream pop-rock from artists such as The Killers, Kaiser Chiefs etc, the indie tribe have taken a turn towards 80s-style electro pop with artists such as Ladyhawke and MGMT at the forefront. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are no exception to this. From the opening track, ‘Zero’, Karen-O’s piercingly powerful vocal tears through a mish-mash of synthesized sounds, catchy hooks and choruses driven by an uncomplicated lyric line which would fit perfectly within any mass produced dance track. The gritty rock sound appears to have been catapulted through the mess of wannabe 80’s synth music and flung back out, retaining the gritty, dry edge that encapsulates the trios unique flavour with a dirty-disco coating. Fans however, are unlikely to be disappointed as the album progresses, with tracks such as ‘Runaway’ and ‘Shame and Fortune’, retaining the heavy acoustic sound of Show Your Bones. This new album perfectly embodies everything we have come to expect from Yeah Yeah Yeahs, from the opening nod towards the new 80s synth revival before settling into the unique, almost grungey sound they are oh-so loved for. Cream.
