Showing @ Pleasance Dome 15-30th Aug 18:15 1hr 16+

The problem with working as a stand-up, a writer or in any facet of the creative industry is giving up that necessary and utterly mundane admin job that pays the bills. Working her way up the chain, Conaty made it to Office Manager and had that rare gift of the keys to the biscuit cupboard, complete with sleeping bag. But after receiving a letter from her former school (run by the Cribs and Bloods of Catholic Nuns) asking her to come and do a speech, offering advice to the young women about to head into the world the 31 year-old singleton began to question her position. What emerges are some funny, some real and some silly questions about the nature of life.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, one of the themes of this year’s Fringe seems to be an overwhelming cry for solidarity and human interaction and Conaty’s show is no exception. Dismissing twitter as the thing that would cause the human race to be annihilated if discovered by intelligent life and briefly worrying about the rapid growth of technology, Conaty articulately flits from that avant-garde word play that plagues so many young comics, to engaged and insightful observation of the modern condition. Despite edging on being a little too self-deprecating in places, Conaty’s debut is powerful, enjoyable and best of all: promising.
