The UK premiere of this Iraq War drama is set in April 2003, just three weeks after the fall of Saddam Hussein, and follows a Kurdish grandmother and her teenage Grandson as they journey through Iraq trying to find their son and father, who has not been seen since 1991.
Filmed entirely in Iraq, Al-Daradji’s film chronicles the very human cost of war through the eyes of two people, both entirely dependent on one another’s help and company. Beginning with haunting shots of dead and desolate landscapes, Son of Babylon follows these two characters as they encounter displacement, isolation and ultimately, despair as their search grows more desperate. Although the story and characters are fictional, this film is a beautifully moving depiction of the real plight facing many Iraqi’s whose real life search for missing loved ones continues nearly 20 years after the first Gulf war. Poignant and heartbreaking film making at its best, this piece is a testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity and our unwavering belief in hope against all the odds.
