Aussie indie-rock icons Spacey Jane’s third album, If That Makes Sense, is a record layered with swinging guitars and introspective lyricism. This latest release shows a growth and fine-tuning of their sound, since they gained traction from hit single ‘Booster Seat’ back in 2020. Produced by Mark Crosley, known for his work with The 1975 and Arctic Monkeys, the album shows a more polished approach compared to their earlier work.
The ethereal opening (‘Intro’) certainly sets the tone of If That Makes Sense with its melodic guitar and light vocals, which transfers smoothly into one of best tracks: ‘Through my Teeth’. The upbeat and beachy song was released earlier this year as a single and captures the guilt and dissonance that comes with growing up. The dreamy guitar ballad is fuelled with longing and nostalgia, similar in theme to their earlier work.
However, there is a definite change in style seen in ‘All the Noise’, which blends the ethereal with raw emotion. It’s an aggressive rocker with determined vocals and a distinct bass which cuts through moments into the dazed intro.
The album fluctuates between this aggression to their typical dreamy indie style. ‘Falling Apart’ earns a favourite ranking due to its similarity to ’80s power ballads. The emotional depth to the song gives the album its status as being more refined than previous material. Lyrically, it delves into themes of personal turmoil and the complexities of relationships; it’s a breakup anthem. It aligns with the album’s overall consideration of love, loss, and self-discovery.
If That Makes Sense definitely shows a more vulnerable and experimental side to the band; a clear evolution in style and sound.
