Sports Team’s latest release moves from the raw sound of their earlier work to a more refined and theatrical style, typified by the bouncy title track which satirises generational stereotypes. Lead single ‘Sensible’ was released last month and has lived in my playlists ever since. From the opening guitar intro I was instantly hooked; its got an upbeat energy that will send the audiences feral this summer. The lyrics explore modern pressures and societal expectations by critiquing the myth of self-improvement and commodification of wellness culture.

The song opens with “Well they wake up early / then they go to bed at 9:15 / so they can focus on their breath and all that,” instantly setting the sarcastic tone, making fun of the supercilious amount of online content which promotes completely unsustainable ‘healthy’ lifestyles.

Addressing further societal issues, ‘Bang Bang Bang’ is a visceral response to America’s gun culture. Rather than preaching, the track takes the typical Sports Team approach of witty sarcasm, but with a darker edge than usual. Its chorus is both catchy and haunting, with quick repetitions of ‘Bang Bang Bang’ that serves  as a chant-like refrain. Lyrically and musically, the track mirrors the frequency of gun violence and how desensitised Americans are to it; something fortunately bizarre to the UK where gun violence is much less frequent.

The album is layered with smart but subtle cultural commentaries. Upon first listen of ‘Moving Together’ I was surprised to hear a sample from Coronation Street; rooting the song firmly in a British context. Musically, the track blends their typical energetic and guitar-driven style; a catchy rhythm with just a hint of the ethereal, especially toward the denouement. In asking repeatedly ‘”are we moving together” they question the authenticity of connection in the digital age. It’s both immediate and timeless as the emotional distance contrasts with physical closeness. The addition of the Coronation Street sample emphasises an irony of the drama in everyday life and rigid routines.

As a whole, the album showcases a confident and mature sound, blending political commentary with humour and high energy. It stands as a vibrant snapshot of 21st century challenges and ironies. The band’s ability to blend their distinctive wit with a sophisticated and experimental style is incredible and what sets Boys These Days apart from their previous releases.
