Steve Sale’s quest to become a legitimate superhero is chronicled in Superhero Me, a funny and extremely low-budget documentary, which follows Sale as he travels around the world and embarks on a gruelling diet and exercise regime in order to discover what it means to be a living legend.
Filmed, as the disclaimer states, on various pieces of recording equipment so that Sale’s one man mission to achieve the ultimate childhood dream could be captured and told by any means necessary, Superhero Me begins as a tongue-in-cheek analysis of the universal appeal of the superhero. The name, costume and back story are just a few of the subjects Sale covers in order to create his new identity, SOS. But what began as a fun project soon becomes serious as the discovery of other real-life superheroes, and the opportunity of meeting the infamous Master Legend in Florida leads to Sale postponing his honeymoon in order to meet America’s only registered superhero. Witty, original and above all, entertaining, Superhero Me alludes to issues of identity and escapism, whilst questioning what makes a hero. And through this cinematic journey Sale realises you don’t have to wear a costume to be a hero, because inspirational people are everywhere.
