Nick Moran/UK/2010/100 min/tbc
Nick Moran follows his critically acclaimed directorial debut, Telstar, with The Kid, a harrowing drama based on the true story of abused child Kevin (Rupert Friend) that accompanies him through the 70s, 80s, and 90s as he attempts to escape his troubled past and tries to make his fortune as an entrepreneur in a difficult and unforgiving world.
Based on the autobiographical books The Kid and The Kid Moves On, by best-selling crime author, Kevin Lewis, Moran’s film is at first unsettling viewing, as the scenes of the young Kevin enduring appalling physical and verbal abuse at the hands of his mother, Gloria (Natasha McElhone) are as relentless as they are brutal. Whilst Kevin’s home life is damningly portrayed, it’s the state of social services at that time that emerges as the real villain of the film, as bureaucracy and poor training allows the abuse to continue. But what sets this film apart is The Kid’s sense of hope, trust and childlike innocence, as Kevin’s unwavering faith in those around him leads to his exploitation and another fight for survival. Simultaneously heartbreaking and uplifting, The Kid is a powerful story about the strength of an inspirational man.
