Pietro Marcello/Italy/2009/76 min/Italian with English subtitles

Director Pietro Marcello focuses on his home-town of Genoa, a seaport in Southern Italy, in The Mouth of the Wolf, an award -winning documentary which pays homage to the rich legacy of Genovese history, and follows the 20 year love story between ex-con, Enzo, and his transsexual partner, Mary.

Combining his own film with archive footage of Genoa, and images of the decline of modern industry, Marcello creates a spellbinding look into the past and fortunes of his birthplace while capturing the relationship between the documentary’s primary subjects. Featuring audio recordings between the couple while Enzo spent one of many stretches behind bars, The Mouth of the Wolf captures the ups and downs of a passionate affair, blighted by Enzo’s inability to stay out of trouble with the law. By following a pair of outsiders brought together by their low social status, similar pasts and unconditional love, Marcello has succeeded in creating a completely unbiased look at modern Genoa. Beautifully shot and edited, The Mouth of the Wolf is a tender film that humanely documents the declining fortunes of a once powerful town through the eyes of two of its inhabitants, who struggle to be heard in a judgemental world.
