The creator and director of the Star Wars franchise is put on trial by fans and critics alike as his alleged cinematic crimes against his life’s work are argued and dissected to present a semi-autobiographical and altogether refreshing tribute to the man behind the legendary movies.
Comprised of a mixture of contributors, including Francis Ford Coppola, the original Darth Vader, David Prowse, and archive interview footage with Lucas himself, The People Vs George Lucas charts the sudden rise and catastrophic fall of one of the 20th century’s most prominent film directors. Beginning with Lucas’ humble beginnings, the film follows the man and his work through the decades from American Graffiti, to THX-1138 and finally his more recent and critically panned offerings, including the fourth Indiana Jones movie. But whilst this documentary at first appears to exist to mock Lucas and his new direction, what actually emerges is an unbiased philosophical argument on the issue of whether the artist or their audience own a piece of art, and the artist’s continuing right to change their original work. Philippe’s film is a fascinating and fun look at the continuing evolution of a 70s sci-fi movie, and its lasting effect on the world.
