Showing @ Gryphon Venues at the Point Hotel, Edinburgh until Sat Aug 24 @ 12:00
It’s a pity that this show’s run came so late in the fringe. Without the fireworks and fanfares that other larger productions have, this charming, well produced and wholly enjoyable show will probably not get the audiences it deserves.
A compendium of East European folk tales told by seven women to an orphan of a snowy storm. The young cast, using limited set and costumes, bring to life these stories of family breakdown, love and loss and much to their credit don’t indulge in any Disney-like tidying away of the unhappy endings. Adding appropriate music with a Weimar cabaret tint helps to give the show additional atmosphere and, with the exception of one of two moments, the dance and movement effectively underline the storytelling. The performers from Cheltenham Ladies College should be applauded for avoiding the well-worn theatrical paths of dodgy Shakespeare, Berkoff and Pinter and looking into the dark woods for something a little quirkier.
