Showing @ Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh, Tue 13 & Wed 14 Aug @ 12:30

It is a heartwarming sight to see the Assembly Room‘s massive Music Hall full to capacity with a crowd of all ages eager to welcome two elderly men onstage to drink tea and chat. Over the course of the following hour retired Labour MP Tony Benn and former Bishop of Edinburgh Richard Holloway, proceed to put the world to rights.

These are two men with plenty to say, but Herald Scotland‘s Alan Taylor does an excellent job of directing the conversation. It is a thoroughly illuminating, philosophical hour which delves into the Scottish referendum, the decline of the Labour Party, the Iraq War, the dangers of organised religion, emails from Archbishop Desmond Tutu and considered conversations with Saddam Hussein.

Above all, these Two Old Gits remind the audience that there are still people of huge principle in the world, and some of them are here today. And for two men with a combined age of 168 years to remind a large roomful of people that even in this troubled time, there are still glimmers of hope to be had – now that is a true Fringe highlight.
