Carrie is on a quest to purify herself. If she can purify her body and her mind, she’s sure to reach the state of inner peace and tranquility that she yearns for. Some might consider her methods to be somewhat punishing. But what price is too high when you’re trying to achieve perfect beauty, inside and out?
You’re needy (sounds frustrating) is part theatre, part performance art. It’s a performance for one, by two actors. You’re asked to wait in front of Tills Bookshop on Buccleuch Terrace, five minutes before the show start time. Carrie’s brother will come to collect you. And then he takes you to Carrie (Grace Morgan). You’ll find her up four flights of stairs so this isn’t a show for anyone with mobility issues. But it is a show for everyone with a grim fascination about the extent to which popular culture is shaping (strangling) our youth.
This is a beautifully put together thirty-minute production (including the stair climb) that looks, smells, sounds and feels like you’re lost in a fervent, gently feverish self-help ritual. At once innocent and disturbingly adult, Carrie perseveres with the programme beyond the point of sense. The good news is you get to help. But whether your help is actually helping or whether you’re just pushing Carrie further along the path to self-destruction is the million dollar question.
