“You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find a Prince” so Little Princesses are reminded by their mothers. And so we’re taught from an early age to yearn for a handsome Prince and a happy-ever-after scenario. But what if the frog doesn’t want to be kissed? Or the Prince isn’t really your type? Tightlaced Theatre’s fairytale for the Fringe suggests that doesn’t matter and love isn’t all we need.
When the Water Fairy’s magic flute is stolen by an evil goblin (Rick McKay), Princess Alexandria (Marilyn Wilson), Tony the Frog (not Toad – Robert Howat) along with Henry (Calum Barbour) and Louie (Torya Winters) the musketeer rats must go and rescue it before all the water in the Kingdom dries up.
Robert Howat’s new show for kids (big and little) is the third part of his Feline Fables series. The camaraderie and rivalry between the characters is endearing; the spirit of team-work is present and the kids will love it – the sampling of Tony’s big juicy flies being a favourite (sweets never get old). The multi-role play is effective and slick. As the story progresses, Tony learns to be brave and Princess Alexandria realises that she doesn’t have to marry a Prince if she doesn’t fancy him. In a concise 40 minutes, we are reminded that it’s more important to be happy with who we are and that the best way to defeat a goblin is to send him to sleep. The happy ever after is less a romantic kiss against sunset, and more a song and dance to which we’re all invited. Why be a betrothed Princess, when you can be a dancing queen?
