As the Commons recently took a vote on whether politicians should be allowed to use Twitter during meetings, a debate which has irritatingly spread to Scotland, the question raised is: are we getting anything done? David Watson’s new short for the Play, Pie, Pint season looks into this idea of lost communication and how we may find solace in the more physical relationships we once enjoyed. Paines Plough co-Artistic Director James Grieve guides trio Rebecca Elise, Rachel Ogilvy and Jack Reid as they chop and change between family members looking for connections, DJs questioning the drinking culture of Britain and cultural narrators.
Watson’s inspection of the importance of social media is no doubt a timely focus, analysing the reified natures we have imposed on ourselves. But with a disjointed and slow narrative, possibly reflecting the fractured patterns of our communicative abilities, it sometimes comes across as a little inaccessible. Of course, the irony is that a satirised analysis of how we interact feels a little boring at times, which of course points the finger squarely in the face of its audience. But it means that its comment on the death of social progression and interpersonal behaviour just feels underdeveloped and requires less of the ‘static’ presentation it offers itself in.
