Showing @ Festival Theatre Dec 9-Jan 8

One of the most loved children’s classics comes to Edinburgh for Christmas, along with all the pantos and cheesy tack a century after Frances Hodgson Burnett’s book was first published, this influential, delicate story comes to life in Lucy Simon’s (music) and Marsha Norman’s (lyrics) musical adaptation.

Set in the early 20th century, Mary Lennox (Ellie Coldicutt and Sophie Kavanagh), comes back to England an orphan, after a cholera outbreak in British colonial India and changes the life of all who come into contact with her and the garden. The mysterious ’Secret Garden’  unlocks the happiness that is missing from so many of the characters lives. This is a dark tale that has captivated generations of adults as well as children over 100 years.

Director Anna Linstrum has a great track record with her work with the Traverse Theatre and previous success with James and the Giant Peach, The Snow Queen and The Sound of Music. With Siobhan Redmond (Holby City), Norman Pace (Hale & Pace) and Graham Brickly (Bread), the child actors have some weighty characters to lean against if things get tough. If you are going to take all the family to see something this holiday period, go and see this.
