Showing @ Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, Fri 08 Feb only
Cloud Eye Control brings 3 distinct works to the Traverse, to varying degrees of success. The company use undoubtedly fresh and at times dizzying technological performance techniques, however what they have to say behind all those flashing lights and experimentation hangs in the air. We are left lacking in several areas: professionalism in performance, energy, and at times, artistic taste, all of which underplay a powerful musical score, and moments of visually arresting work.
Final Space makes use of silhouette fused with animation. We see a real time performer recreated to a digital version, traversing various locations and seeming inner journeys. While evidently well considered these at times self-consciously metaphoric concepts fail to reach the audience.
Ocean Flight uses a pure blend of projector, camera and performer, to arresting success. We follow the emotive journey of Charles Lindbergh, who transmits a powerful and physical performance, through multi projected images of varying size and intensity. It’s an original concept for performance, and begs for further exploration.
Myth and Infrastructure is a solo project by Miwa Matreyek utilising voice, dance and text, along with an array of dazzling video and sound bringing a definite atmosphere. There’s a kookiness to the spacey singing, while electronic compositions are high energy and focused. Under a light of humour this work is golden.
All in all we are presented with a mixed bag of visual offerings, with lots of potential for progression, and plenty of good creative ideas. What we need to see now is the “work in progress” sign taken off the door.
