An enjoyable and undeniably macabre evening of provocative Shorts. Stand out films include Crocodile, an enchantingly gritty tale of a love affair between a former opera singer and a woman with a crocodile. Metaphors aside, the animation shuns aesthetic beauty in favour of smutty realism, a tinged yellow hue which yields a nauseating gloom. It’s a multi-layered work, the kind to withstand and deserve repeat viewings. Aalterate is visually arresting and visceral. Utilising a range of animation techniques, from line drawing to the photographic, a dark and abstract journey leaves you awestruck. Madame Tulti Pulti is a remarkable puppetry/animation fusion, telling of a harrowing trip on a ghostly death train. We follow an emotive and likeable protagonist on her distressing journey, with plenty of gore to scare the weak stomached. The haunting Nightingales explores animation through painted art, leaving the keen impression of its harrowing child protagonist. Wind Along the Coast is a lighter more charming animation, humorous and self-contained, illustrating the effects of a seemingly impenetrable wind on some confusing yet lovable coastal dwellers.
