Best known for their TikTok show Scroll Deep that delves into the latest viral online trends, Benedict Townsend has now brought their natural charisma and hosting talents to the Fringe stage. Following a number of sell out shows, Townsend adds his talents to the growing number of TikTok stars taking their comedy on the road. Selling out the cosy Mash House venue, his intimate show wastes no time launching into the short but sweet stint.
Being a fan of the popular online show or up to speed on your latest internet lingo is no pre-requisite to giving this show a visit, as Townsend discusses more relatable topics such as childhood holidays to Blackpool, being married, and his favourite apps. Within his 40 minute slot, he manages to pack a variety of jokes with a natural stage presence proving that his comedic talents translate well from the screen to stage. His warm presence creates a safe and friendly environment for the audience to relax into without any worry of becoming the butt of a bad joke.
Opening the show with a joke about crowd-work sets the tone for the rest of the set, this is a very self-aware routine that bounces from joke to joke at breakneck speed. Townsend manages to hold your attention so well that by the end you don’t even realise the time has gone. The time slot may be why there is little room to digest each and every joke which would be the only minor critique to allow some breathing space to really appreciate the different comedic techniques, but his delivery and rhythm serve him well.
His confidence and energy is admirable, seeming very at home on the stage, with a great presence and engaging style. A good middle ground between silly and relatable, you would be safe to take the parents to this comedian (which seems a harder task than most especially at the Fringe!).
His lighthearted and quick-witted humour makes his comedy show a great addition to any millennial or Gen-Z Fringe list. Be quick to catch him before he’s gone!
‘Friends With Benedict‘ is at Just the Tonic at The Mash House – Just the Attic until Sun 11 Aug at 16:00
