Debate on multiculturalism is rarely out of the press, whether as an achievement to be proud of or because it’s “not working”. But what if you’re a direct product of it, embodying disparate cultures? Aizzah Fatima performs this self-penned one-woman show, exploring the complexity (and schizophrenia) of being a Pakistani-American. All seven of Fatima’s characters are distinct and believable, though inevitably some are stronger than others. Zahra, the six year-old girl blithely unaware of why her father’s been incarcerated, is for example well performed but obvious. The play levels criticism on both sides, making for an interesting internecine dialogue. But there is one recurrent criticism which applies equally to both Pakistani and Western culture: Woman’s place in society. Intelligent and personal, Dirty Paki Lingerie adds another passionate voice to the debate.
