Edinburgh International Film Festival 2012: Beyond EIFF
Beyond EIFF exists to give those of an adventurous frame of mind an opportunity to experience the blurred edge between art, experimentation and film (which is normally the preserve of the fest’s August cousins). At the Collective Gallery artist/filmmaker Simon Martin takes an appropriately sedentary look at a classic piece of furniture – The Louis XV armchair from its origins through to designer interpretations like those of Philippe Starck. Another classic of art and design is celebrated with artist David Austen’s silent film The Gorgon’s Dream focusing on Benvenuto Cellini’s Head of Medusa screened deep inside the Burns Monument on Regent Road. The Stills Gallery has more Italian flair on display with a series of video works from the country running from the early eighties to the present day. New Media Scotland’s strand of Atmosphere screenings look at the theme of magic and faith including the premiere of Belief by Thomson & Craighead and the ultra-short artistic phenomenon of PechaKucha.
