Edinburgh International Film Festival 2012: New Perspectives

Films to look out for in this year’s New Perspectives section include California Solo in which Robert Carlyle plays a one-time music legend who is struggling to face his inner demons. First Position follows six young dancers as they try to forge a career in the competitive world of ballet. The second screening on June 30th is followed by a Q&A session on dancing careers with Kerry Livingstone of the Royal Conservatoire. With the ever-growing popularity of roller derby in Edinburgh, thanks to the Auld Reekie Roller Girls, Leave it on the Track is a great addition to this year’s programme, a Texan film which teaches and entertains as we watch the roller derby championship season coming to a close. Finally, for those interested in current events, there’s Tahrir: Liberation Square a visually stunning documentary on the events that led to the downfall of Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak.
