THEATRE: COMEDY

Showing @ Hill Street Theatre, until 28th Aug @ 21:25, 50 mins

The comic clash between consumer society and our increased obsession with drawing on ancient rituals like Yoga or meditation to ease the soul into the Western existence forms the heart of Hex, the latest show from Strange Town Theatre Company. Co written and directed by Tim Primrose and Sam Siggs, Hex follows married couple Toby (Ben Clifford) and Gwen (Sarah MacGillivray) as they attempt to cure a little house hold problem by inviting typical hippy/goth/witch duo Siobhan (Beth Godfrey) and Six (Colleen Garrett) into their home to face some real magik.

It’s an intimate affair, and in the small Hill Street studio space the direction is suitably simple and character orientated. Drawing on the absurd, Hex manipulates some expertly pitched comedy into weightier issues and the four performers seem to relish the fantastical situation they’ve been dropped into. The way we aspire to have the ‘perfect house’ is humorously grilled in Hex and complimented by a discussion on psychic-fraudsters. Primrose and Siggs have managed to capture the contradictions and idiosyncrasies of human behaviour and subtly draw a parallel between modern, consumer led life and a our inability to leave our engrained beliefs in magik and the mysterious behind.  This show is filled with humour and strange twists while the cast’s high energy and immensely enjoyable performances make this what Fringe shows should be: a bit of meat, a lot of comedy and young artists experimenting and this time succeeding.
