Otto Preminger / USA / 1944 / 85min

One of the defining films of the film noir genre, and an Oscar winning thriller, Laura has been lovingly restored to its former glory. Presenting itself as a classic whodunit, the movie follows a group of characters after the eponymous Laura (Gene Tierney) is horrifically murdered. But as Det. Lt. Mark McPherson (Dana Andrews) investigates her death and falls in love with her, suspicion lands on those closest to her, including her friend Waldo Lydecker (Clifton Webb) and her untrustworthy fiancé, Shelby (Vincent Price).

Assembled with a mix of comedy, mystery, drama and intrigue, Laura is a chestnut example of 40s American cinema that challenges and entertains the viewer. A number of twists ensure that this film is not just a murder mystery, but also a tale of friendship, discovery and intrigue. Preminger’s film, its use of narrative, suspense and surprise creates a masterpiece of 20th century filmmaking that’s as visually stimulating and extravagant as it is simple. Highly original and featuring a standout performance from Price in his role as the suspect fiancé, film lovers of all ages should see this classic on the big screen this year.

Showing as part of the Glasgow Film Festival 2012.
