Tailor-made for a mosh pit at the end of the world, Brooklyn band Lip Critic occupy a really interesting position sonically, hovering at all times between classic American punk like Black Flag , bratty hip-hop like Beastie Boys and Slowthai and psychedelic/industrial warriors such as Butthole Surfers and early nineties Ministry. Luckily I enjoy all these artists, mostly, and Lip Critic blends such genres with consummate ease.
So too, this third album sees the band reflecting on their usual themes: consumerist society (‘Jackpot’, ‘Debt Forest’) and everyday brutality (the punishing ‘Leg In A Snare’). ‘Two Lucks’ arrives hurtling, snarling out of the traps and it’s impossible not to shake yr bones.
Thanks to vocalist Bret Kasner’s motormouth chutzpah, Connor Kleitz’s strategically placed samples and the frenetic double drums of Danny Eberle and Mikey Sandvig, it’s all just the right side of accessible, with enough noise for hardcore fans.
It’s not for everyone, not should it be. Fans of Wet Leg, Mumford et al may want to give it a miss. The dystopian nature may be off-putting for sensitive little indie flowers. But for those of us who grew up with old school noise merchants, it really hits the spot, even though there’s no such concept as musical tribes left, and genres are increasingly redundant.
When you stare into the abyss, the abyss has a killer soundtrack. Let’s hope there’s a future worth fighting for.
