Showing @ The Stand, Edinburgh until Sun 25 Aug (not 12, 19) @ 17:10
The theme of Lucy Porter’s show is the North South divide and while she does wander off topic, we still discover why this Croydon girl felt such affinity for the North and how her experience of life in living there faired against her romantic ideal. Being Porter of course we get many diversions along the way with stories of motherhood and innovative ways to deal with sexism as well as an anecdote that might interest Operation Yewtree.
More than talented enough to be an equal opportunity offender, Porter gives both the citizens of Derby and her birthplace Croydon something to complain about whilst the main target of her humour is, as always, herself. Her attempts to escape her southern roots and fit in in Manchester are as wincingly honest as they are hilarious as are the tales of her father’s stingy attitude to birthday presents. You’ll probably won’t come away from this show with any great revelations on the gap between the home counties and the “desolate north” – to quote Lord Howell, but you will laugh – a lot – and spend time in the company of one of the most engaging, clever, honest and purely enjoyable comedians on the fringe.
