Various Directors/Mexico 2010/106 min

The 1910 Mexican Revolution is the thematic touchstone this compilation of short films revolves loosely around, and the diverse mix of subject matter reflects in a variety of ways what that society has since become. Produced by Motorcycle Diaries actor Gael Garcia Bernal’s company CANANA, the acclaimed actor also takes the helm on standout short Lucio, dealing with a younger generation with secular values battling the old theocratic attitudes that the revolution sought to end.

Other standouts include Rodrigo Garcia’s closing short 7th And Alvarado, which places horse-riding soldiers from the revolution in modern-day downtown Los Angeles and is shot in luscious time-stretching slo-mo; it’s a juxtaposition that confronts us with the notion of Mexican identity in a country that continues to economically strangulate Mexico. The rest of the shorts deal with many of the issues you’d expect; border-crossing and democracy struggles to name a couple; and the whole is a decidedly hit-and-miss affair, so the finished film will perhaps struggle to cross the border into mainstream cinema. But as a showcase of the next generation of Hispanic talent, Revolucion displays considerable potential.
