Most Fringe debut comedians will base their show around their personal life. In truth, it’s the only guaranteed way to avoid replicating another comic’s set – but it also creates a uniform environment of chatty stand ups. Rob Beckett is one of the latest TV arrivals to a younger generation of innocuous, slightly political, engulfed-in-Twitter-culture comedians doing the funnies. But Beckett himself is affectionate, warmhearted and freshly charismatic, as is his material here – a ramble through his life as a kid down south and some truly bizarre family rituals. Mixed in with some images and video clips, there is something extra-special about this show, as we are given direct access to Beckett’s home movies. It won’t set a new standard for comedy, but it will certainly make you laugh.
