Whatever the time is, it’s always Pimms o’clock somewhere in the world – and this film is no exception, it’s permanently happy hour. Otto Kullberg (Henry Hubchen) is an old luvvie in the truest sense of the word, a washed up old lush of stage and screen, clinging on to his success while drinking his own weight in vodka. He’s like a German Oliver Reed, and quite the loose cannon on any daytime chat show. Young girls and adoring fans fall at is feet while he props up the bar and falls on his face out of cabs, the hilarious cad.

One day Otto goes over his 3 bottle limit, well, goes on a bender during filming on the erotic love triangle Tango for Three. Didn’t I just watch that on Channel 5? Otto is a risk – a volatile, loud mouthed, big hat wearing, foot stomping lush. One more stunt like this will cost them the film. So, younger actor and Gene Wilder lookalike Arno Runge (Markus Hering), is brought in to shoot the same scenes, and so the battle of giant egos begins. But in amongst the winks to camera, and hilariously hammy lines, its underlying themes tap into universals such as fear of aging, loneliness, missed opportunities and self-deception. It’s a quirky little film with a cheeky twinkle that isn’t afraid to poke fun at it’s own industry, whatever your tipple de jour.
