Met with ambivalent reviews upon its release but later regarded as one of the greatest achievements in English literature, Wuthering Heights is the classic gothic novel about the violence and destruction of love. Now, One Act have devised a tribute worthy of the book. And while the frugal set is skilfully utilised by Josey O’Neal’s Spartan direction, it is the actors who make the show. Their joint performance is tight, running smoothly through the narrative with fine use of soundscapes to evoke the tempest harried moors, while their individual performances are well cast and executed. That said, the pace is exhausting; seven deaths in 50 minutes would be pretty good going for Sophocles, and allows little time to savour the suffering. However, this is still a solid homage to Emily Brontë‘s masterpiece.
