As Scotland recovers from the few and unexpected days of sun at the end of September, October arrives with a familiar sight: rain, dismal, dreich, horrible rain. So, while the prospect of experiencing the great outdoors in these conditions may neither appeal or feel like a particularly safe prospect, the Edinburgh Mountain Film Festival gives outdoor enthusiasts of all ages, backgrounds and disciplines the chance to enjoy Scotland’s and the rest of the world’s beautiful scenery, without having to leave the city.
Running since 2003, this independent film festival brings together outdoor sports of all kinds, and features, but isn’t just limited to: hill climbing, kayaking, skiing, snowboarding, BASE jumping and exploring. Comprised of lectures, films and exhibitions (held at the EICA in Ratho), the festival has attracted some big names, and this year Johnny Dawes, Catherine Destivelle, Andy Turner and Lukasz Warzecha are just some of the notable guests giving lectures on everything from free climbing to outdoor adventure photography.
As well as the various films, lectures and exhibitions available, all attendees are invited to the EMFF’s annual party, which is held on the Saturday evening, and continues into the wee small hours of the morning. Open to everyone, from professionals, to enthusiasts, to people who are looking to getting into a new pastime, the Edinburgh Mountain Film Festival is the prime opportunity to meet other like-minded people, and be able to experience this celebration of all things outdoor, dangerous, and fun – without even having to get wet.
