Showing @ Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, run ended

With knights in shining armour, fights to the bloody death and an evil raven intent on causing misery, Wee Stories‘ new production, Arthur, Story of a King, under the playful direction of Iain Johnstone, has all the elements required to captivate your wee ones. However this production goes beyond the realm of children’s theatre and in doing so has created a piece which is beautifully enchanting and inspiring, transporting the audience into the world of ancient Britain, as we watch the tragic story of King Arthur unfold.

With a dark and dusty set, littered with old books and church candles, the production has a very antique and historic feel. As story-tellers Andy Cannon and Iain Johnstone begin to unravel the mystery surrounding King Arthur’s history, their curiosity and frustration at this legend endears with a jokey wistfulness. Watching as they turn Cornflakes boxes into fearful knights, innocent maidens and finally new-born babies, the pair ensure that we follow them every step of the way in their quest for the truth. Wee Stories’ production creates an environment where dreams become reality and possibilities seem endless. They cleverly cover Arthur’s reign, from his humble childhood to his untimely death with quick, effective precision. Investigating notions of humanity, equality and heroism, Arthur, Story of a King goes beyond the myth of King Arthur, delving into personal morality and showing us Britain’s first attempt at democracy, with Arthur’s invention of the round table.
