The Fall Guy is a fast-paced, funny, and incredibly enjoyable action comedy which fulfils, and exceeds, all expectations. Balancing impressive real stunts with consistent laughs and a genuinely intriguing plot, this film keeps up the fun and thrills for the entire runtime.
Following a stuntman, played by Ryan Gosling, returning to the set and trying to woo the director of the film, an old flame played by Emily Blunt, this blockbuster is full of car chases, explosions and fights. What makes it truly stand out from other action films is the real sense of heart that it has. Characters are not caricatures but are fleshed out and imbued with real humour and flaws, making for a compelling watch.
Similarly, the comedy in the film is not made up of the typical syrupy quips seen so often in this brand of high budget film, but has a snarky yet vulnerable edge which feels relevant and modern, without relying on endless pop culture references to prop it up.
One of the best things about this film is it’s ability to make fun of itself. It knows exactly what it is, it pokes fun at genre films and at the wider film industry without ever seeming trite. In addition to this, stunt performers and other behind the scenes staff are showcased and championed, resulting in a heightened and funny glimpse into the business of making films that is utterly charming.
The stunts themselves within the film are plentiful and deliver genuine thrills. One of the highlights is during the credits where behind the scenes footage shows the actual in-film stunts being filmed which only serves to make the falls, jumps, and fights more impressive.
Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt are both brilliant leads. They exude endless charm, wit, and effortless humour which elevates the love story beyond basic Hollywood fluff to something that is full of energy and fun to watch. Gosling’s delivery of lines and ability to convey the perfect mix of idiocy and action hero keeps the character, and the film, constantly entertaining and interesting
The presence of deep fakes in the plot could be a source of eye rolling, but its placement is well done and feels relevant and timely. Following the controversy surrounding AI and the recent strikes in Hollywood this feels all the more important.
Overall, The Fall Guy is a thrilling and fun summer blockbuster which leaves you smiling and with a resounding sense that high octane, big stunt films can still be fresh and exciting.
