Scottish artist and filmmaker Ross Hogg has won the Vimeo Staff Pick Award at the Vienna Shorts Festival 2019 with his work 4:3, a commission by Perth’s Horsecross Arts.

Currently being exhibited in Perth Concert Hall’s Threshold artspace, 4:3 is part of the first solo exhibition in a public institution by the BAFTA award-winning artist. To celebrate, Horsecross have released the Virtual Reality part of the exhibition experience on Vimeo.

“Immersing oneself in a room lined with walls emitting the sounds of static, fizzes and pops may seem unpleasant, unless those sound blips morph into a moving symphony of shapes, colours and an increasingly catchy beat,” said the Festival Jury of Ross’s work. “For its charming, fun and mesmerizing approach to experimental animation (and the Virtual Reality experience), we present the Vimeo Staff Pick Award at Vienna Shorts Festival 2019 to 4:3 by Ross Hogg.”

The Edinburgh-based filmmaker focuses on creating dexterous, hand-crafted animation using a variety of materials, celebrating the vibrancy and physicality of the medium. He has receiving five nominations for the Scottish BAFTAs and won the BAFTA Scotland New Talent Award for Animation in 2014, the BAFTA Scotland Award for Short Film in 2016, and the BAFTA Scotland Award for Animation in 2017. He currently works on a freelance basis whilst occasionally teaching on the Undergraduate and Masters Programmes at The Glasgow School of Art.

The exhibition continues at Horsecross until 27 Jun 2019 with free entrance and an opportunity to embrace the Virtual Reality experience on site.
