Showing @ Scottish Malt Whisky Society, Edinburgh until Sat 24 Aug

Scott Smith is one of Scotland’s premier magicians, and commands a stylish evening of whisky, fine dining, and intrigue. It’s an unforgettable evening, but could be pushed to greater heights.

We are invited to his company, in the smallest, most intimate of venues (seating around 15). The guests are the audience. Interludes of magic are interspersed between courses, making you forget all about the food – it’s the fastest 3 hours of the Fringe.

He’s carefully considered the details: The service – impeccable, the dinner – most palatable and the whisky – aided by Scott’s silky description – shall convert all non-believers. An all around sensorial experience, we see Smith is pushing for a higher calibre performance at the Fringe. To match his level, the performance would benefit from a suggested dress code.

The concept (seemingly “togetherness”) is a little trite, but he is charming and charismatic enough to lend weight to his incredulous tales, and encourages his audience to pause, reconsider the senses, and truly focus on a meal and its companions. It’s much more than a novelty but now we need danger and fire.
