It’s eerily quiet at The Rum Shack as BDYRWKS takes the stage, somewhat appropriate for the lonely, windswept ambient noise that follows. In a long coat/cloak, they create wave after wave of pulsing electronic sound; all perfectly atmospheric but bearing little resemblance to the main act, and even by the end the crowd is barely pushing into double digits.

Titanic are currently touring as a four-piece, with drums and saxophone rounding out the band alongside the core duo of Mabe Fratti (cello/vocals) and Hector Tosta (guitar). Kicking off with ‘AnĂ³nima’, the opening song of their brilliant debut, 2023’s Vidrio, it’s immediately clear that the band is a well-oiled machine. Their sound is expertly crafted: Fratti’s vocals and cello are crisp and clear, while the guitar and saxophone are abrasive and intense, cutting through the glistening strings to create a beautiful tension.

Most of this year’s HAGEN is played in a set that’s a little short of an hour, the band positively beaming between songs, delighted to bring their unique arrangements to Glasgow. Fratti’s voice is the star of the performance, able to reach exquisite high notes, and then dip and bend, vaulting into melodious runs. Everything she sings is in Spanish, so the precise meaning may not be fully comprehended, but the emotion is keenly felt.

Despite these songs clearly being the result of deliberate and careful consideration, there’s an improvisatory edge to them live. The saxophonist in particular seems to have been given free reign to wring all of the skronking irruptions he can out of his instrument, veering close to free jazz at times. Tosta is equally experimental at times, his guitar a serrated presence next to the mostly polished flourishes of Fratti’s cello.

The new album has a lot more pop hooks than the first, and we appear to be moments away from timid shuffles turning into bona fide shimmying when the band sadly end for the night. However, Titanic know the first rule of showbiz and it’s safe to say the few dozen here tonight would happily have lapped up some more. Let’s hope there’ll be a next time.
